An elderly Berkeley County man who was attacked in his home by an unknown assailant earlier this week has died, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The 78-year-old Sheep Island Road man died on Friday while at a hospital where he had been admitted in "extremely critical condition," the day before, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies and the county Coroner's Office are working together to determine the man's cause of death.

His name has not been released publicly.

Deputies were called at 2:05 p.m. Thursday to the man's home after his wife returned home from work and found him "bleeding in their bedroom," according to an incident report. He had several bumps on his head and was conscious but didn't respond to his wife.

Investigators believe the incident may have been a robbery, the Sheriff's Office said.

Anyone who might have information relevant to the case is encouraged to call the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office at 843-719-4465 or CrimeStoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
