Driver attacked group with bat, police say

Charleston police are looking for the driver of this Jeep in connection with an aggravated assault early Sunday.

Charleston police are looking for the driver of a newer model, dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee who reportedly attacked a group of pedestrians with a baseball bat early Sunday.

The suspect is described as a white male with olive complexion. He is between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9 tall, muscular build, weighing approximately 210 pounds. He has short-cropped dark hair and was wearing khaki shorts with a white or gray T-shirt.

A police incident report said the assault began after the driver and three pedestrians exchanged words. The driver exited the Jeep and attacked members of the group with a baseball bat, possibly giving one of them a broken rib, among other injuries.

Another member of the group was able to get control of the bat and then used it to strike the vehicle as the driver got back in and fled, the report said.

The vehicle was last seen headed north on Meeting Street from George Street with a broken front driver's side window and a broken driver's side headlight. The incident occurred at approximately 2:53 a.m.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
