The congregation at the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Charleston completed the $1.6 million purchase today of an 1840s-era Charleston church, drawing a round of “God bless you’s” from those at the real estate closing.
The purchase includings the former St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church at 43 Wentworth St., plus the eduction building, cemetery and parking area.
Redeemer church spokesperson Nancy Vinson said more than 800 people made donations to the effort.
Without the purchase, the site was in line to be bought and turned into a private residence.
The Greek Revival-styled building was originally constructed as a Methodist church around 1840, but it merged with a Lutheran congregation and changed to that denomination shortly after the Civil War.
