A tree that fell on a power line closed U.S. Highway 17 in Awendaw this morning.

Maj. Jim Brady said that around 8 a.m., a van with a ladder rack snagged the line and stretched it, causing the traffic hazard.

Contrary to earlier reports, the incident did not involve a school bus.

Highway 17 was briefly shut down, but only the northbound lanes remained closed at 8:45 a.m.

Electric crews were working to restring the line so the road could be reopened.
