In my 15 years at the helm of the Charleston Branch NAACP, I’ve had many opportunities to “chat” with Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.

Always these meeting requests have been met with an open-door policy and a willingness on the part of the mayor to listen as we shared with him the concerns that so often come before us from citizens. While these complaints have not always resulted in the resolution we thought appropriate, I’ve always left the mayor’s office feeling that at least he listened with a sense of caring and responded with respect.

On a more personal note, I will always hold fondly the mayor’s gestures of care and concerns shown by his thoughtfulness of always taking the time to acknowledge the triumphs and tribulations of my personal and public life’s journey as he knew them. THANKS, JOE!
