Summerville -- Dorchester District 2 School Board on Monday approved a calendar for the 2012-13 school year that will have students starting school five days later than this year and getting out for the summer after Memorial Day.

District officials and liaison groups have been looking at several options since November, said district spokeswoman Pat Raynor.

Superintendent Joe Pye "thought this would be the easiest calendar ever with the challenges we had," she said. "When (the groups) saw the parameters, there was just not an awful lot of flexibility."

State law prohibits districts from having class before the third Monday in August, which this year is Aug. 20.

"That falls five days later than this year, so we are already behind to start with," Raynor said.

The law also requires schools to close for the general election on Nov. 6.

In addition, the 2012-13 calendar includes only eight weekdays off for teachers and nine for students during winter break, compared with 10 for teachers and 11 for students this year.

The last day for students will be May 31, 2013. The last day this year is May 25.

The calendar closely mirrors those being proposed by Dorchester District 4 and Berkeley County School District, Raynor said. Neither of those districts has approved a calendar yet, but Berkeley County will consider it at a regular meeting tonight.
