MONCKS CORNER -- Divers searching the Tailrace Canal for a handgun used in a deadly shooting last weekend came up empty Thursday.
Moncks Corner police Lt. Michael Roach said divers were looking for a gun used in the shooting death of Edwin Valasquez-Rodriguez, who also went by the name Omar Rodriguez.
Police arrested Ricardo Mendoza, 29, of Hickorywood Drive, on Tuesday and charged him with murder.
He is being held without bail at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
Roach said they called off the search for now after divers from the Berkeley County and Charleston County sheriff's offices spent two days searching the bottom of the waterway with no luck.
A warrant said the men were arguing when Mendoza shot Rodriguez twice at close range while Rodriguez sat behind the wheel of a car parked on Fairground Road at the Park City Mobile Home Park.
The warrant said Mendoza fired five times, striking Rodriguez in the chest and arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Several witnesses came forward and identified the suspect, who fled in an SUV, according to the warrant.
Mendoza was picked up Tuesday morning.
Roach thanked members of the community for helping identify the suspect.
