Detyens Shipyards agreed to pay a civil penalty of $28,000 for allegedly mishandling hazardous waste, according to a filing with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The commercial shipyard failed to properly mark containers of hazardous waste and failed to ensure that the containers were not stacked more than two high without getting written approval first, the filing said.

The shipyard also failed to keep a hazardous waste container closed during storage and failed to minimize risks at the facility, according to the filing. The company agreed to ensure proper management and design for storage areas in the future, in addition to paying the fine. Officials declined to comment about the penalty.
