GAFFNEY — A South Carolina sheriff's deputy is accused of trading marijuana and money for sex with a female police informant.

Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that 56-year-old Troy Cooper of Gaffney was charged Tuesday with misconduct in office. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office fired Cooper the same day.

Authorities say Sheriff Bill Blanton asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate.

A SLED arrest warrant cites recorded telephone conversations in accusing Cooper of the exchanges between March 2008 and last Friday.

Sheriff's spokesman Joel Hill says Cooper's duties included serving civil papers and courthouse security. Cooper previously worked at the county jail.

Cooper was released from the jail Tuesday evening on a $5,000 bond. He has declined to comment on the case.
