Colleton County sheriff’s deputies have arrested one suspect and are seeking another in connection with an incident in which an 84-year-old man was dragged by a car in Cottageville.

The incident occurred Thursday after the victim discovered two men stealing metal from his property near Cottageville, according to the sheriff’s office.

The elderly man followed the two thieves to Low Country Recyclers on Round-O Road, where he identified his property and accused the two men of stealing it, authorities said.

When the two men tried to drive off in a silver Saturn station wagon, the victim grabbed the driver. The thieves then dragged the elderly man about 60 yards through dirt and rocks before he fell to the ground, the sheriff’s office said.

David B. Mays, 23, of Nuthatch Lane in Cottageville was arrested Saturday in Berkeley County, but the other suspect, 25-year-old John Todd Terry Jr. of Cottageville, was still on the run Monday, Colleton County Chief Deputy Ted Stanfield said.

Mays was being held at the Colleton County jail on charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and receiving stolen goods. His bail is set at $155,000.

Terry is wanted on a charge of grand larceny, authorities said.

Deputies have not identified the victim, who was transported to Colleton Regional Hospital for treatment. Deputies said he was in serious condition late last week with multiple cuts, bruises and internal injuries.
