Berkeley County Sheriff. Leroy Burnell/Staff

The death of a 78-year-old man who was attacked at his home in Berkeley County last week has been ruled a homicide.

Neville Morgan died of blunt force trauma Friday at an area hospital, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

A day earlier, his wife had returned to their home at 993 Sheep Island Road and found him bleeding in their bedroom, according to an incident report.

Deputies who responded to the home around 2 p.m. Thursday found Morgan on his bed with several bumps on his head. He was conscious but not responding and had been "severely physically assaulted," the Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives are investigating the case as a possible robbery.

Morgan's death is the second homicide in the Berkeley County sheriff's jurisdiction this year and the 14th in the tri-county area.
