COTTAGEVILLE -- A woman is dead and a young man was taken to Medical University Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting in this rural community Saturday.
Colleton County Sheriff George Malone said deputies still were investigating the shooting Saturday evening.
Cottageville Police responded to a 911 call on the shooting on Griffith Acres Drive about 5 p.m. and found two victims. A woman was critically wounded and later died, and a 16-year-old Ladson boy was taken to Medical University Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.
It's unclear if Saturday's shooting shared anything in common with a wave of violence that has washed over Colleton County during the past several months, including a string of shootings and gang violence in Walterboro and the surrounding county.
Particularly troubling was a Nov. 9 drive-by shooting that killed two adults and a 20-month-old girl and left six others wounded at Gerideau and McDaniel streets. Several more shootings followed in the area, prompting the State Law Enforcement Division to send in reinforcements and the state grand jury to launch an investigation.
In early July, more than 130 heavily armed officers swept through the county in a wave of pre-dawn raids aimed at breaking the backs of two local gangs tied to drive-by killings and other crimes.
