Charleston County Council on Tuesday upheld its decision against supporting a cross-island road for Johns Island, killing the idea for now.
Council's Finance Committee last week had opted to shelve pursuing a Sea Islands Greenway capable of reaching Kiawah and Seabrook islands. Instead, the committee voted to seek about $5 million in grants to make various safety improvements on existing island roads.
Advocates had argued that the roadway is needed as a safety measure across Johns Island, while opponents said it would destroy the island's rural character and open areas to development.
One motion that failed Tuesday was to place the greenway on a local Council of Governments long-range plan and apply for federal grants to fund it. It died after approximately 45 minutes of discussion.
