The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified a man hit while crossing Ashley Phosphate Road the night of Feb. 25 as Ramon Navarette, 46.
Navarette was from Mexico but had been living in the North Charleston area, Coroner Rae Wooten said. North Charleston police said Navarette was hit by a Chevrolet Malibu when he stepped into traffic between Mazyck Road and Interstate 26.
He was not in a crosswalk. Police said no charges were filed against the driver.
The coroner's office turned to the public for help to identify the pedestrian. Wooten said that someone finally came forward with a possible name and that the coroner's office learned Navarette had family in the area.
