A sport utility vehicle driven by
Colleton County Sheriff George A. Malone sideswiped an Orangeburg school bus Tuesday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. No one was seriously injured.
About 2:45 p.m., the bus was traveling south on U.S. Highway 21 near Rowesville and turned left onto Hewitt Road, said patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, a spokesman for Troop 7. The sheriff was passing several vehicles, Jones said, and the SUV sideswiped the bus.
Four children were taken to Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, Jones said. The driver of the Orangeburg District 5 school bus, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
Malone, who also was wearing a seat belt, did not appear to have serious injuries, Jones said. Malone was taken by a private vehicle to a hospital to be checked out.
Attempts to reach Malone were unsuccessful. A woman who answered his cellphone shortly after the collision said he was OK. There were no passengers with Malone at the time of the incident, Jones said.
No charges were expected to be filed.
