MURRELLS INLET -- The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a fishing boat captain missing since Thursday night.
Multiple media outlets report that the search was halted after officials combed 590 square nautical miles southeast of Murrells Inlet.
Officials said a crew member on the fishing vessel Lady Die woke up just before 7 p.m. Thursday and found Capt. Mark Shackelford of Surfside Beach was missing.
Longtime friend Michelle Scott told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that Shackelford is a devoted father to a 15-year-old daughter. She said Shackelford was a very experienced captain who had suffered a stroke a couple of years ago.
Officials said they inspected Shackelford's boat and found it in compliance with safety standards.
