Mr. Claud Gibbs Gilliam, Jr. died Friday in Charleston. He was born in Salley, S.C., on December 4, 1926, the son of Claud and Elizabeth McElveen Gilliam. He resided in Whitmire, S.C., from 1926 to 1944.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific in the United States Navy. He attended Presbyterian College and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1955, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was employed by the Federal Civil Service as chief personnel officer for civilians at Fort Jackson until his retirement in 1983.

Since 1990 he resided in Charleston. He is survived by one sister, Cynthia Byrd Gilliam of Columbia.

A memorial service will be held at First Scots Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Whitmire, where Mr. Gilliam's father was mayor for 27 years. A graveside service there will be private.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to the Dr. Jeffrey Wong College of Medicine Student Education Fund at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Visitation will be at Mr. Gilliam's home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8.
