FOLLY BEACH -- Officials continued searching Friday night for a missing Citadel cadet.
A car belonging to Joshua Edwards was found during the day on East Ashley Avenue, but no sign of the cadet has turned up, Public Safety Department Chief Dennis Brown said.
During daylight, personnel from four agencies put boats in the water and walked shorelines and land areas seeking any sign of the cadet. Brown said authorities haven't given up hope of finding Edwards alive.
"This is a rescue, not a recovery mission," Brown said.
He said officers were still looking for Edwards after dark.
A 21-year-old chemistry major from Greer, Edwards has missed several accountability checks since Thursday evening, according to L. Jeffrey Perez, the school's vice president of external affairs. "We are very concerned as to his whereabouts," Perez said in a written statement.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter to the Washout area of the beach, a popular surf spot, to assist boats from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Charleston Police Department.
The Citadel Public Safety Department issued a "be on the lookout" bulletin to law enforcement agencies.
