A child was transported to an area hospital after suffering a reported shark bite Monday afternoon on Isle of Palms.

Officers, firefighters and EMS responded to Palm Boulevard and 30th Avenue shortly before 4:30 p.m. on report of a child who was bitten in the calf and foot, according to a dispatch supervisor with the Charleston County Consolidated 911 Center.

Mayor Jimmy Carroll said the child's injuries were not serious. Further details were not available Monday night.

The incident may be the first shark bite of the season for the greater Charleston area. Last week on Hilton Head Island, a shark bit a 10-year-old boy in the forearm as he splashed in waist-deep water.
