An outdated listing on a state Web site for job-seekers fueled rumors Wednesday that Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen was preparing to bolt from the Holy City after less than three years on the job.
Police officials quickly dismissed the rumors as untrue and stressed that Mullen has no intention of leaving the police department.
Someone circulated an e-mail around the city and to media outlets after spotting an ad for the Charleston police chief's position on the state Commerce Department's "OneStop" Web site of job listings. The listing was posted last month but actually dates to 2005, when Charleston was seeking a replacement for retiring chief Reuben Greenberg.
Charles Francis, police public information officer, said the posting was clearly a mistake on someone's part. The city is not looking for a new police chief, and Mullen plans to remain in Charleston for the foreseeable future, he said.
"The chief has no intention of leaving," Francis said. "He is committed to the city and the people here."
Francis said he spoke with representatives from the Commerce Department and Officer.com, which also listed the position, on Wednesday. Both agreed to remove the ad, he said.
