Two local charter school are among eight statewide to win $75,000 planning grants to help them continue developing plans for their program.
Pattison's Academy for Comprehensive Education and Palmetto Scholars Academy are the two Charleston area schools to receive the grant, and both plan to open in August 2010.
The planning sub-grants were awarded by the state Department of Education from Public Charter School Program Grant funds received from the U.S. Department of Education.
"Charter schools allow parents, teachers and community members to take responsible risks and create new, innovative and more flexible ways to promote academic excellence within the public school system," state Superintendent of Education James Rex said. "These monies will help local entities enhance diversity, address students' differing learning styles and provide an avenue for creative curriculum."
