Results from a DNA analysis performed more than a year after a 2016 homicide led authorities to arrest a 29-year-old Charleston man.
Edward Jones was shot and killed Sept. 17 during an armed robbery in front of a North Charleston home. Officers arrived around 10 p.m. to find Jones lying in a driveway, according to an affidavit. He was transported to a hospital and died of his injuries.
A second victim in the robbery reportedly was forced into a car trunk and not found until the next day. He told investigators that two masked men approached him and Jones in front of 3034 Terry Drive and demanded jewelry, cash and a cellphone, the affidavit states. He reported hearing several gunshots while inside the trunk.
One of the masked men, authorities said, was Gary Brisbane of Charleston, who was arrested Tuesday and faces murder and armed robbery charges. Brisbane also was shot at the scene, police said, but it's not clear who shot him. Authorities collected DNA from a blood trail at the scene.
Experts matched Brisbane's DNA, which was in a database, with the blood trail, according to the affidavit. Investigators learned that Brisbane had told Dorchester County deputies the same night as the slaying that he had been shot in the left forearm, though he did not describe exactly what happened.
After the State Law Enforcement Division told local authorities that the blood matched Brisbane's DNA stored in a database, investigators obtained a warrant to collect a new sample, which confirmed the finding.
