CHARLESTON — The federal government’s only ship dedicated to exploring and mapping the planet’s largely unknown oceans is making a port call in South Carolina.
Journalists and school children are scheduled to get a chance on Friday to visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Okeanos Explorer.
The vessel uses cutting edge technology with remotely operated vehicles that can dive beneath the waves and feed high definition images of the ocean to scientists anywhere in the world in real time.
It also has a multi-beam sonar that can provide wide-area, high resolution images of the ocean floor for mapping.
Scientists say that while oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, only 5 percent has been explored by humans.
