Child abuse and neglect IN SOUTH CAROLINA: The following numbers are from 2007, the latest year for which complete data is available.

--27,293 referrals for child abuse and neglect were made. Of those, 18,337 reports were referred for investigation.

--12,762 cases were substantiated (12 per every 1,000 children), an 18.2 percent increase from 2006. Among them were 7,701 children neglected, 2,500 physically abused and 484 sexually abused.

--19 children died as a result of abuse or neglect.

--5,147 children lived apart from their families in out-of-home care, compared with 4,920 children in 2006.

--1,844 of the children living apart from their families were age 5 or younger, and 919 were 16 or older.

--47.4 percent of children leaving out-of-home care were reunited with their parents or other family members.

--435 children were legally adopted through the public child welfare agency, a 2.4 percent increase from 425 in 2006.

--Of the 5,147 children in out-of-home care in 2007, 8.1 percent were living with relatives, 34.6 percent were waiting to be adopted.
