Authorities are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy Monday in North Charleston as an apparent drowning.

Responders were called to a North Charleston swimming pool Monday afternoon where life-saving treatment was attempted on the child immediately.

The pool is at St. Charles Place apartments, 1945 Pine Forest Drive.

An emergency vehicle took the child, whose name has not yet been released, to Medical University Hospital.

An autopsy will be performed Wednesday, said Charleston County Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin. Indications are the death may be considered accidental, police said.

Meanwhile, the Colleton County Coroner on Monday released the name of the 23-year-old man who drowned in the Edisto River this weekend.

Bernaldo Velazquez of Walterboro was pulled from the river bottom about 4 p.m. Saturday, Coroner Rich Harvey said.

Authorities say Velazquez's body was found about 15 yards from where he was last seen at Colleton State Park.

Rescue workers from Colleton and Dorchester counties, as well as state Department of Natural Resources officers, arrived at the scene after someone called 911, reporting a man and a child missing underwater.

The child was recovered before rescuers arrived and launched a two-hour search for the man.
