HARLEYVILLE -- A man found dead Thursday in a median of Interstate 26 may have been the person a motorist dropped off in the area Nov. 13, authorities said.

"One possibility we are looking at is a hit and run with this individual," S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres said.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said it appears that the man was hit by a vehicle, possibly a dual-wheeled truck, perhaps an 18-wheeler.

The body was discovered about 11:45 a.m. by a crew that was cutting grass near the Harleyville exit. The body, which was found near mile marker 178, had not been identified by Thursday night, authorities said.

Beres said investigators have interviewed a woman who said she gave a man a ride Nov. 13 and dropped him off about a mile from where the body was found.

An autopsy is planned. Multiple agencies, including the patrol and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, came to the scene. Traffic on I-26 westbound was routed onto one lane in the area while authorities examined the scene.
