MONCKS CORNER -- Berkeley County is considering Sunday beer and wine sales county-wide.

A proposal for a referendum to allow Sunday alcohol sales is on a council committee's agenda Monday.

Residents can buy beer and wine every day almost everywhere else in the Lowcountry.

Sunday alcohol sales became legal in Moncks Corner in the fall. They're also allowed in Berkeley County in Goose Creek, Hanahan, Daniel Island, North Charleston and Summerville.

Charleston County, Dorchester County and most of the local major towns and cities also have passed similar referendums.

The full council would have to approve the Berkeley County proposal three times for a referendum to be set.

"People are just looking at it from an economical perspective; it's a business thing," said Councilman Caldwell Pinckney, chairman of the community services committee that introduced the proposal.

"One thing we know, you can't legislate morality. We'll just have to see how it goes."
