COLUMBIA -- A man killed his 83-year-old neighbor because she walked in after he broke into her home, then used her cell phone to call a dating service, authorities said.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told multiple media outlets that 34-year-old Sammy Lynch confessed to killing Evelyn Harbin last week after he was arrested on Thursday.

Lott said Lynch broke into Harbin's home looking for something to steal for drug money.

The sheriff said Lynch came back a few hours later to clean up the crime scene and take more things.

Lott said Harbin's SUV was found in an abandoned building near Lynch's home and that cell phone records show Lynch called a dating service with Harbin's phone after she died.

It wasn't immediately clear if Lynch had an attorney.
