Lt. Col. Jason Kirk became the 83rd commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Charleston District on Friday during a change of command ceremony at the Citadel alumni center.
As district engineer, Kirk is responsible for a variety of projects, including protection of navigable waterways. He oversees an annual program of approximately $250 million and more than 200 employees locally and around the state.
Prior to arriving at the Charleston District, Kirk most recently served in Iraq and in Germany as the executive officer for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
From 2003 to 2004, Kirk served with the Corps of Engineers in the New Orleans District, working as a construction division project manager and as a planning project manager for the Louisiana Coastal Area Restoration Plan presented to Congress in 2004.
