Charleston police have arrested a Ravenel man wanted in connection with an armed robbery.
Police pulled over Ray Donnelle Hayward, 22, in a traffic stop Tuesday in North Charleston and issued a probation-violation warrant, Charleston police Cpl. Fred Bowie said.
A U.S. Marshals Task Force and North Charleston police helped track down Hayward, who was sought by Charleston officers concerning a prvious armed robbery, Bowie said.
On May 27, a man approached a woman on Parkdale Drive in West Ashley about 1 a.m., Bowie said. The man placed a gun to the woman’s head and demanded her purse, according to police. The man fled in a dark Jeep.
The suspect and vehicle were spotted several minutes later at a BP gas station at 106 Main Road, Bowie said. Officers pursued the vehicle and recovered it on Hughes Road, but the driver escaped, he said.
Police determined that the vehicle was stolen from Ravenel.
Hayward was later identified as the vehicle’s driver, Bowie said. He is charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Bowie said.
Hayward was held Tuesday at the Charleston County jail.
