Shots were fired in Walterboro Wednesday but no one was injured, authorities said.
Colleton County sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of Francis and Savage streets shortly before noon for reports of gunshots fired in the area, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
Deputies and other officers were in the vicinity and found a person who was carrying a handgun. The person was arrested, but his or her identity was withheld.
The person was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.
This incident is still under investigation, the press release said.
“It is unknown at this time if this incident is related to the recent shootings in Walterboro,” the release said.
Tensions remained high in Walterboro, where a series of shootings last week left three people dead, including a toddler who was shot fatally in the head, and eight more wounded. The violence prompted authorities to flood the area with police and to consider imposing a curfew and a state of emergency.
