Charleston Fire Department. Leroy Burnell/Staff

Medical University Hospital's Rutledge Tower in downtown Charleston was evacuated Friday afternoon.

Contract workers were painting on the building's eighth floor, and odor from that work prompted the evacuation at 2:13 p.m., said Jeff Watkins, a hospital spokesman.

The Charleston Fire Department was called to the scene and cleared the building for re-entry at 4:03 p.m., Watkins said.

No one required medical attention following the evacuation, he said.
