Dorchester County Council on Monday is expected to ban drinking alcohol or having open containers at public boat landings.

Council unanimously approved a second reading this week of an ordinance that makes the offense subject to a $500 fine and as many as 30 days in jail.

The move comes after complaints of underage drinking, loud noises, drug use, indecent exposure, foul language and gunfire at landings.

Also, a recent cleanup of the Givhans landing on the Edisto River netted more than 500 pounds of beer cans.

"There have been problems at the boat landings dating back to my days in the solicitor's office," said attorney Robby Robbins, who served as deputy solicitor, then solicitor, from 1997 to 2004.
