Airmen from Charleston return from Mideast

Airmen from the 17th Airlift Squadron arrive at Joint Base Charleston Air Base Friday, July 1 after 120 days in the Middle East.

More than 120 airmen from the 17th Airlift Squadron from Joint Base Charleston returned home from their 120-day deployment in the Middle East late Friday and reunited with their families.

The airmen have been serving under the 817th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, headquartered at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, in support of combat operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

Flying the C-1, the crews flew and supported roughly 2,850 sorties, logged more than 8,400 combat flying hours and airlifted more than 107 million pounds of combat material.

Additionally, the squadron airlifted more than 186,000 airmen, soldiers, sailors, Marines and distinguished visitors. The squadron also performed 29 combat airdrops.
