PICKENS — South Carolina police are investigating the drowning death of a 39-year-old man who family members say was afraid of the water.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley told multiple media outlets that the body of James M. Roach Jr. was found Friday about 20 feet from shore in Lake Keowee. He was found face down in water about 3-feet deep.

Kelley said the preliminary cause of death is drowning, but she is awaiting results of toxicology tests before making a final determination.

Roach's family told investigators he did not know how to swim and was afraid of the water. Pickens County sheriff's detectives are investigating.
