Jazz in Charleston was thriving Tuesday morning when Jack McCray's friends, including trumpeter Charlton Singleton (front), marched along Calhoun Street to join hundreds of others for his funeral at Mother Emanuel AME Church. McCray, a tireless advocate of jazz and author of a history of how the genre evolved in the Holy City, died last week at 64. The musicians played gospel hymns 'When the Saints Go Marching In' and 'Just A Closer Walk With Thee.'
