GOOSE CREEK — A shooting at fast food restaurant left a juvenile and another person injured.

Goose Creek police responded around 9:15 p.m. Sept. 22 to the Taco Bell at 104 S. Goose Creek Blvd., where officers found two people suffering gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to Trident Hospital, where one of the victims died. The second victim's injuries are not life-threatening, according to police.

Darnell Hartwell, the chief deputy coroner for Berkeley County, declined on Sept. 23 to identify the deceased victim of the shooting — an unusual decision in a homicide case.

Hartwell said the victim was a 17-year-old boy. The boy's parents, as well as officials from his school, asked the chief deputy coroner not to identify the victim, arguing it would create "anxiety" among students, he said.

Hartwell maintained that transparency was important to his office.

Police continue to investigate the shooting.

The Goose Creek Police Department asks anyone with information to contact an investigator at 843-863-5200 extension 2354.
