A driver fell asleep and crossed the Interstate 26 median near North Charleston's Aviation Avenue Saturday afternoon, causing a four-car wreck that snarled traffic for more than two hours, the Highway Patrol said.

Byron Washington, 20, of Summerville, was driving west around 4:20 p.m. when he went through the cable barrier, Cpl. Paul Brouthers said. His car hit one being driven in the left eastbound lane by Brian Cox, 21, of Simpsonville, Brouthers said. People struck in two other vehicles were not hurt.

Washington was taken to Roper Hospital downtown, and Cox and three passengers went to Medical University Hospital, Brouthers said. Nobody suffered life-threatening injuries. Washington had been working long shifts at a retail store and will not be charged, Brouthers said.

All lanes of traffic had cleared by 6:30 p.m.
