MYRTLE BEACH - A North Carolina man wanted by the U.S. Army for desertion has been arrested in South Carolina on a disorderly conduct charge.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported Monday that 20-year-old Ronald Gene Jackson II, of Star, N.C., was riding on an unsafe part of a vehicle. He was arrested by Myrtle Beach police Saturday and officers discovered that he was wanted by the Army on a desertion charge.

That charge carries a sentence of more than one year. A call to an Army spokesman was not immediately returned Monday.

Jackson was being held at the Horry County jail Monday.

A man who answered the phone at the jail said he didn't know if Jackson had a lawyer and a number for him was not published.
