Coastal Carolina's Kelley, Team USA win women's 4x400m at U20 World Athletics Championships

After just missing out on the final in the women’s 400-meters, Mekenze Kelley more than made up for it.

Kelley, a Coastal Carolina sprinter who was representing Team USA, ran the first leg of the women’s 4x400-meters and helped Team USA win gold with a time of 3:28.06 at the 2022 U20 World Athletics Championships on Aug. 6 in Cali, Colombia.

Team USA, which also included Shawnti Jackson, Akala Garrett and Roisin Willis, finished a full 3.53 seconds ahead of second-place Jamaica (3:31.59) and 3.80 seconds ahead of third-place Great Britain (3:31.86).

Kelley just missed out on the women’s 400-meter final at World Juniors, placing ninth in the semifinals with a time of 53.09 on Aug. 3.

The Smyrna, Ga., native qualified for the World Junior Championships when she won the women’s 400-meters at the 2022 U20 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on June 25 with a time of 52.10.

In addition to Kelley competing at the U20 World Athletics Championships, former Chanticleer sprinter Melissa Jefferson also represented Team USA at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in July, helping the U.S. win gold in the women’s 4x100-meters and finishing eighth in the women’s 100-meter final.
