Coastal Carolina climbs to No. 16, Clemson drops to No. 25 in AP football poll

CONWAY – Coastal Carolina is now the king of the hill in the state of South Carolina.

The Chants are ranked No. 16 in the latest AP Top 25 football poll and the USA TODAY coaches poll, leapfrogging Clemson to make them the highest-ranked team in the state for the first time.

Clemson fell to No. 25 in the AP poll and No. 19 in the coaches poll after losing at N.C. State, 27-21, in double overtime on Sept. 25. The Tigers are now 2-2 on the season.

The Chants improved to 4-0 with a 53-3 drubbing of UMass on Sept. 25 at Brooks Stadium. CCU has not lost a regular-season game since it fell at Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 23, 2019.

CCU has been ranked for a school-record 16 straight weeks dating back to last season when it broke into both major polls on Oct. 18, 2020, for the first time in program history.

Along with being the highest-ranked team in the Sun Belt Conference and in South Carolina, the Chants are also the highest-ranked team in both Carolinas, as N.C. State is the highest-ranked North Carolina team in the AP poll at No. 23. Wake Forest is ranked 25th in the coaches.

CCU will open Sun Belt play when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe (2-1) on Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m.
