MYRTLE BEACH — It’s still smoky in the Myrtle Beach area almost two weeks after a fire that burned 800 acres was completely contained.

The Sun News reports the smoke is from a wildfire near the Carolina Forest development.

South Carolina Forestry Commission Spokesman Scott Hawkins says the smoke will continue as long as the fire continues to smolder within containment lines. He said the commission will continue to monitor the fire but said since it is so large, there is no practical way to put it out.

He said the area is so big firefighters will have to simply let the fire burn itself out.
