Murder trial witness shot multiple times

A witness in an upcoming murder trial of Antwaun Breyon Henderson was shot multiple times early Thursday morning in West Ashley, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Police responded to a 911 call from 788 Corral Drive in the Ponderosa subdivision about 2:30 a.m.

They found 26-year-old George Brown Jr. with multiple gunshot wounds. Brown’s injuries are considered non-life threatening, Sheriff Al Cannon said.

Cannon said at a press conference that Brown’s status as a witness in the pending murder trial is a part of the investigation. The murder also happened in the same subdivision.

“We obviously consider a connection there and we are pursuing that. This is a rare case if, in fact, there is a relationship between the two,” Cannon said.

He said he did not have any reason to believe that Brown’s status as a witness in the trial would change.

The shooting happened when Brown and his younger brother heard noises in the front driveway. The brother, whom Cannon did not identify, went to investigate and was fired upon by a young black male. Brown then came out to the front of the house and the shooter began firing at him, Cannon said.

Tires on two cars in the driveway had been slashed and windows were broken, he said.

Brown was to testify in a trial related to the Oct. 31, 2008, shooting death of Shawn Michael Porter. That shooting also occurred in the Ponderosa subdivision. Henderson, then 21, of James Island, turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office with his attorney and was charged with murder.

Porter, 24, was slain in front of his home on Hitching Post Road.

Henderson has been free on bond, Maj. John Clark said.

Clark said he believed Henderson’s trial was to begin Nov. 29. The Solicitor’s Office could not immediately confirm that information.

A witness reported he was standing in the driveway with Porter when four men got out of a Chevrolet Tahoe brandishing handguns, an affidavit said. It said one man pointed a gun at Porter and asked him about some stolen musical equipment.

Porter ran but was shot and died at the scene. The witness later identified Henderson in a photo lineup, the affidavit said.
