Fire forced a mother and her son from their North Charleston apartment late Wednesday.

The fire started at about 11 p.m. in a downstairs bedroom at the Dorchester Garden Apartments on 5600 Dorchester Road, said North Charleston Fire Battalion Chief Eric Phillips. The mother and her 11-year-old son were out when firefighters arrived, he said. No one was hurt.

Phillips said firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one apartment. He said the bedroom sustained significant damage.

The apartment did not have working smoke alarms, he said.
