HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Some more land in Beaufort County at the site of the nation’s first village for freed slaves is being protected.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/wp1xwx) the Town of Hilton Head and Beaufort County have agreed to pay $258,000 to buy almost 2 acres at the site.
Seven years ago a group on the island organized the Mitchelville Preservation Project to preserve what remains of the area as an historic site. The town and county purchased two more acres at the site last year.
Mitchelville was established on the island in 1862. It was created after Union troops took the sea islands along the southern South Carolina coast early in the Civil War.
The site was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1988.
