A 24-year-old Massachusetts man died this weekend after he fell two stories from a balcony near the College of Charleston campus early Saturday.

James P. McDonough died Saturday afternoon from head injuries sustained in the fall, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten said. His death has been ruled an accident.

Officers who were near the house at 156 Coming St. Apt. B heard the impact, according to a Charleston police incident report released Monday afternoon.

Officers wrote in the report that they first responded to the house at 3:33 a.m. for a loud noise complaint. The officers told the residents about the complaint and returned to their patrol cars to write livibility citations.

The officers were talking to one of the residents about the written citations when, at about 4:15 a.m. they heard a loud noise that sounded like someone dropping a garbage bag, according to the report.

A resident came out of the house about 4:19 a.m. and told officers that a man was lying on the steps to her home. Officers called for firefighters and EMS after they found McDonough lying face down. He was not initially breathing but started making breathing sounds.

Charleston County EMS took McDonough to the Medical University Hospital where he died later in the afternoon.
