CONWAY — Horry County officials say more than 70 manhole covers have been stolen in the county in recent weeks because of the rising price of metal.

They say it’s not only costing taxpayers, but it’s also making roads dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

Authorities are asking people to call police if they see suspicious activity in their neighborhoods and to report any missing manhole covers by using a hotline at 843-381-8000.

They are also asking metal recycling companies to report any attempts by people to sell manhole covers that appear to have been stolen.
