A Charleston man told police he was shot three times by an unknown gunman early this morning.

Charleston police found 23-year-old Cordelria Germain Jefferson, 23, lying in a gravel driveway at 24 Morris St. He had been shot in the lower left thigh, his left hip and the palm of his left hand, according to an incident report.

Jefferson told police that he was riding his bike down Morris Street shortly after midnight when he stopped to light a cigarette. He said he turned around and saw the suspect standing behind him with a gun. He tried to take the gun when the suspect fired multiple rounds at him, according to the report.

The victim said he was able to make it to the driveway where someone called police.

Jefferson was unable to give officers a description of the suspect, except to say that he was a black male and that the gun was a revolver. He was unable to tell officers which way the suspect ran, the report said.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
