A man was shot in the hip during a disturbance outside a nightclub on James Island early Saturday, authorities said.

About 3 a.m., the Charleston County Sheriff's Office was summoned to The Lake House on Mosquito Beach, where they found the shooting victim and several security guards. Mosquito Beach is off Sol Legare Road.

Sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady said deputies were told a large crowd had gathered outside the nightclub around a vehicle and a fight broke out. The security guards were clearing the crowd from the parking lot when they said they heard a gun being racked.

One guard grabbed a shotgun loaded with non-lethal rounds and was bumped into, causing the weapon to discharge and wound the victim, Brady said.

EMS transported the the victim, whose age and name were not released, to a hospital. Brady said he did not know the victim's condition, but the injury was not life-threatening. Brady also said a black male fled the area after firing off several rounds during the disturbance.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident.
