A James Island man who was shot in his right leg this weekend told Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies that he didn’t initially realize he had been shot.

Deputies arrived at the Medical University Hospital about 1:30 p.m. Monday and spoke to a man who said he had been shot in his lower right thigh the night before, according to an incident report.

The victim said he was standing on Seaside Lane on James Island when a small, dark-colored car stopped and two men exited holding guns. One of the suspects screamed at him, “Give me the money.” When the man turned his pockets inside out to show he didn’t have any money, the “taller” suspect shot him, the police report says.

The victim told deputies that he thought the bullet just grazed him and didn’t know he had been shot until he returned home and realized he couldn’t bend his leg.

The victim was unable to tell deputies any more about the suspects or the vehicle.

The incident is under investigation.
